As an acknowledged climatic health resort (the lake is 533 m above sea level), Dießen provides for its visitors and guests a splendid variety of recreational activities and entertainment. The Ammersee is the third largest lake in Bavaria, and offers enjoyable swimming, sailing, rowing, and surfing. In Dießen there are three bathing beaches, several places to rent a boat, and Germany's oldest Lakeland sailing school. The steam liners of the State Steamship Company, including the remarkable paddle-steamer 'Diessen', built in 1908, will take you to the numerous landing-places around the lake. For centuries, fishing has provided a living for several family-run businesses. The fishermen and the Bavarian dukes negotiated and agreed upon their mutual rights and duties in the Middle Ages. Events like the 'Fischerstechen' - a sort of jousting in rowing boats - which take place every summer, remind us even today of Dießen´s long tradition as a fishing-village. |
